Community Service in Paraguay
This program will introduce volunteers to the Paraguayan people, culture and languages through living with a host family, doing community service, attending orientation and training sessions and recreational activities organised by YFU Paraguay. The program is in partnership with local civil, social and environmental NGO’s.
Volunteers can focus on development assistance and community service in the fields of Social Work, Education, Childhood or Adolescence, Environment, Biology and Health. Field assignments will be made according to the volunteer’s profile and chosen field.
In addition to volunteering, participants will have the opportunity to study Spanish or the Guarani language (unique to Paraguay), attend presentations by specialists in Tourism, the History of Paraguay, Archaeology, Biology, Indigenous Culture, Arts and Culture as well as visits to museums and historic sites in and around Asuncion.
During the first 2 weeks of the program, volunteers will participate in an intensive Spanish language course. These classes will not only teach the language, but also practical things like how to handle money, or how to use the local bus system. In addition, students will learn some basic Guarani phrases.
Who can participate?
High school graduates from 18 to 26 years old. Volunteers must be prepared to learn Spanish before departure and willing to learn about the Paraguayan culture. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the Paraguayan culture by living with host families for the duration of the program.
